Join the conversation. ![]() ![]() When I began interacting with scripture though writing, a new relationship unfolded. He called this practice scriptio divina, a term he had learned from the writings of Stephanie Paulsell. He instructed us to take up pen and write back to scripture in whatever form inspired us: poetry, lists, story, letter, and so on. On a Saturday afternoon, one of my professors invited a small group of us to practice a form of lectio divina -careful reading of scripture coupled with silent contemplation. Scripture did not really speak to me until one day I wrote back. Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. What scripture passages do you have questions about? Faith and the Spirit-both mysterious-sustained me through early adulthood, reason opened the door to the Bible, and now imagination exercised through creative writing forged a living relationship to the Bible. In this way, I entered into a relationship with scripture. I copied scripture word for word, questioning it, prodding the text to uncover what had not been said, speaking back to it about what I found confusing, too good to be true, too hard, too easy, and sometimes trying to rewrite it with details from contemporary life. But I truly felt in conversation with God while I took part in my own spiritual growth and understanding. I still wondered where God was during painful experiences. Past mistakes or hurts still bothered me. I still worried about being a good enough person. I am not saying that I started receiving answers to all of life’s problems.
